Without sounding too ignert here please explain what is going to happen that would cause to get water and prepare food and have non perishable items.

@MooMaw : If too many cootied people like in other countries, I'm not going out to the store. And, what if they close down cities like they're doing in Europe and Asia. Whatcha gonna do then? I just see this as an opportunity to get a jump start on the old hurricane supplies.

I didn't buy anything that we wouldn't normally eat & I'd think most others will be the same way . But if things get bad with the flu or this Coronavirus I certainly don't want to be at the grocery store or any public place .Babies , little children & older adults are most likely the 1st ones to catch this type of stuff . I looked it up & Hong Kong flu they estimate killed between 1 million & 4 million world wide . And most can't get into a hospital because they get put on drive-buy status pretty fast .

@bbk : Everything you replied with, That's why. I very casually picked up a few extra things with Coronavirus in mind but there are many that are stocking up in a big way. I believe that the people freaking out make people who wouldn't normally freak out ...freak out. Praying we'll all be okay. 👍

I think if I had children I would just make sure I have a plan if schools close. Japan has closed ALL schools for a whole month because this thing is so contagious. It's a preventive measure. It's best to err on the side of caution.
So, it's not just about physical things to stock, but just in the back of your mind be thinking about some "what if's".
I'm sure that won't happen here, but just in case!
My motto has always been "Fail to plan, then plan to fail".

Yesterday I made a comment about why in the world would people be out stockpiling water for the Coronavirus. Today I'm eating my words as schools are shut down and the 4th largest city in America doesn't have safe drinking water at the moment. Maybe good to have some water on hand.
