@Sammee : Yeah, so was mine, now that I think about it, but perhaps, 6th grade is a little too young for them to grasp the concept of conception? Maybe, it should be a yearly thing? I know a lot of people don't like the schools doing it, and say it should be the parents responsibility, however, I have seen a lot of parents who were never going to have that talk with their children--

I thought it was illegal to even ask about children ? At least that's what they told me in my interviewing training.

rabbit8 : The problem with that is I would guess that for a man who has children ,it isn't usually something that would keep them from being hired. For a woman, it is.

@nikkiole : How so? If I have the choice between a man with children and one with none, I would choose the one with none in most cases. It depends o the position I'm filling.

MrsT : I think you're right. I've only conducted a couple of interviews, but from what I remember that would have been a no no question. Could be wrong.

@nikkiole : This depends on the size of the company and if it's public or private.

I thought it was illegal to even ask about children ? At least that's what they told me in my interviewing training.

@MrsT : They cannot outright ask, it is illegal, but they can ask leading questions and let the person ramble on. Most people get very uncomfortable during periods of silence. It is an interview technique to use the awkward silence to try to get the interviewee to start spewing information they would not ordinarily reveal, that includes information about children, marriage, etc. You'll see what I mean during your next interview.

A common ploy is for them to discuss their medical insurance benefits, such as how they offer great rates for family plans. They'll give more details until they can figure out if you have a spouse or children from your responses.

Another easy question, what do you like to do in your free time, what are your hobbies? Then you start answering how you love to travel and go snorkeling with your new husband, and you go four times a year to experience as many locations before you have kids. Or, your kids really enjoy going to the zoo and learning about animals. Both answers are going to send your resume into the trash can.

@rabbit8 : You honestly have no clue that what you are doing is illegal and will result in an EEOC lawsuit? Or, do you work for a company that is less than 15 people?

Edited because I hadn't yet read your earlier response and assumed you worked for a larger company.

This depends on the size of the company and if it's public or private.

@rabbit8 : Neither of those have @ny bearing on hiring practices. What you have been saying is a very archaic way of thinking and I hope you are trying to be funny. Every job should have KSA's. Knowledge , skills, and abilities. The very first question asked is if the person has read the KSA's and understand the requirements of the job. One of my job requirements was to be able to work hours other than 8-5 with days off other than Sat/Sun. If they happen to have 9 children under the age of 4 but say the schedule is not a problem it's not up to you to make any assumptions. I've been there, and sometimes a hire bites you and it turns out they can't meet the requirements but that is now a work related issue and not discrimination. We all have biases that creep into our decisions, but to be fair we must stick to the tangibles.

Apparently the reasons are he doesn't have to deal with one getting pregnant and needing leave

@nikkiole : so, out of the running just because we could possibly bear a child. Gosh, that seems fair. /end sarcasm

@nikkiole : But only the women. @rabbit8 : And apparently that's true, if you are a private company with less than 15 employees, apparently it doesn't apply. Doesn't seem right, but there it is-- www.eeoc.gov/employe rs/coverage-business private-employers
