Gas Prices

In a world where everything revolves around the use of plastic, is it correct or misleading for a gas station to advertise "cash" price on the marquee, but charge the "credit" price (+10cents/gallon) for debit card purchase?

I had assumed debit card transaction would be same as cash - but after reviewing my receipt from the new Exxon on WLHP, I found they charge credit price for debit card purchase.

@redneckroy : I had thought the same thing, and made the same discovery. I had assumed the extra charge for CC would be to reclaim the 3% or so paid by the seller per transaction, but I don't believe the same policy applies for debit transactions. I hardly ever walk into the store anymore when buying gas, let alone pay cash in advance. I want to fill up, and not have to calculate how much cash that will take ahead of time.

I'm very apprehensive about using my debit card at gas stations. Too many skimmers reported. I'd rather just pay cash or credit card.

@redneckroy : Absolutely not. Debit transactions still go through a processor same as a credit card. Visa, MC, etc. Most stations I have seen now say "card". Anyways, if a station has such a scenario, it's bound to be a bad deal price even in cash. Prime example is Texaco in Atascocita behind Walmart. ( Source: mother has been in consumer banking for 45 years)
Edit: Texaco is worse. Just saw it is "Gift Card" lowest price. Cash/Credit/Debit is about 30¢ more. Gift card price is higher than anyone else around too.

@Floyd : you can give them 25 and if the machine stops before then, they will give your back the difference. Assuming you want to walk into the store twice.

I don't use gas stations that have a different cash vs credit price.

I also don't use my Debit card at a gas station.

@tommie : it is unwise to use a debit card these days for nearly anything, let alone at a gas pump. Use a credit card as most have 0 liability protections. Yes you can get your money back on a debit card but it can take days to process.

I always pre-pay inside or at the window since I don't want them holding $50 for up to three days for $20 of gas, I use a debit card then because I am using it the same as any other store.
The processor charges for debit aren't equal to those for credit and even if there were there is absolutely nothing that should entitle gas stations to be the only place still adding on to the price for bogus reasons like that. While not all gas stations which have different prices for card vs cash or gift card have bad prices (stripes for example is pretty competitive on the cash only price) I don't like to encourage this behavior.

@GBinHOU : contrary to what people think, most stations are only making a few cents per gallon profit. Those processing fees really eat at it. Also the holds on debit cards are a product of your bank. The gas station has nothing to do with a debit card hold.

@ParksideRes :

Well, I get the lower price when I use my Chevron/Texaco credit card. I also find them to be competitive. But maybe that's just me.

I've been getting my gas @ HEB gas stations. Always competitive or lower and they have a simple kiosk to pay at. Happy thus far but have noticed the few that tease the cash rate and never go to those.

@Clydepuckett : you will that way but even that price is 25-30¢ more per gallon from nearly everyone else. Lowest advertised there was 2.29 this weekend. Same time I filled up at Shell for 2.04.

I took a drive. Being retired I have time for this ********. Wish I'd taken my phone for photos.

Texaco cash price.......$1.99
Shell cash price......$2.03

I'd say Texaco is competitive......but then again, maybe that's just me.
