I thought it meant that since the commander was offed then all of the townspeople disappeared because since the commander was the one calling the shots/in charge of this whole thing, once he went away, so did the audience who supported that, and he was able to mentally walk away freely without having the cloud of "the walk and penalties" that came with it… idk I could also be wrong 🤣

I watched a movie yesterday I have never seen before not a big Travolta fan, but it was not bad it was from 1999 The Generals Daughter.

It's an ambiguous ending, meant to leave it up to you. Did everything work out for him? Did he get shot immediately? You don't know for sure.
Apparently the book had a completely different ending, but still a tad weird.
