As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with
Mark London, owner of Deep Abyss Scuba!
Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been
around?
We
are a NAUI scuba diving training center. We opened up in June of 2024.
We offer a very large range of training courses for recreational and
technical training. We are a NAUI Proffessional Deveoplment center where
we can train
divers from entry level all the way to Instructor Trainer. We are a
NAUI Technical Training Center where we can deep technical divers for
decompression, mixed gases, and overhead environments. We are also proud
to be a VA Testing Center and approved DOD SkillBridge program
facility.
How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
I
always had a passion for the underwater world. I can recall the 80’s of
watching the only diving shows out like Wild Kingdom with
MartySniderman. These shows excited me and sparked a desire that has
never ended. I started the business to get back to my roots of diving
that had been shifted to the side for some years.
Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
The
biggest thing I am proud of being able to bring my passion, education,
and experience to all those that would love to be a part of it. I
especially love that I can give back to ourservice members that have
risked their lives tokeep our country free. I think the thing that makes
me unique in this industry is my education as a Marine Biologist and the former role as management of the Texas A&M University dive program.
What is your favorite part of running this business?
My
favorite part of this business is seeing the joy on peoples faces when
they get to experience what I have loved for so long. To be ableto make
new friends and see that passion and spark rise about something so dear
to myself is what I enjoying doing this for
Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
Anyone
who has an interest in exploring the underwater world and seeing what
it has to offer is our ideal customer. Anyone from as young as 10 can be
certified and educated about our oceans and water environments to help
foster the future.
Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background?
My
diving career began with my first class in 1992 when I as a junior in
high school. I slowly began continuing mytraining and eventually went to
college at Texas A&M University at Galveston. There I obtained a
Bachelors Degree in Marine Biology. Eventually I became the Chairman of
the TAMU Diving Control Board where I oversaw the diving program for the
university system. This included recreational, technical, and
scientific diver courses. These
students serve as scientific divers by both NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. I also held the role of Project Diving Coordinator where I assisted with faculty diving research projects.
Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
We
are constantly offering special promotions on equipment and training
throughout the year so please connect to our social media platforms to
keep up with all that is happening.
Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
We
have an indoor heated pool and access to year-round training locations
to be able to continuously off comfortable opportunities.
How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
I
can see our family of local divers growing rapidly and being able to
offer a multitude of fun and unique diving opportunities from training,
trips, and volunteer activities with amazing organizations.
