I'm not even sure what the appropriate action is for the child. If the child wasn't aware and just did as they've been taught, is DAEP appropriate? If so, what would that look like, 1 -day of suspension? Also, what will this teach the child? Not to speak up in the future?

What I know is the younger kids get snack in the afternoon, because they eat lunch before Noon.

DAEP is usually doled out in 15, 30, 60, and 90 days increments. If the child didn't intentionally bring it, DAEP seems very severe.

My thought was an older sibling may have put the gun in the backpack without the child knowing it. Just a thought.

@AMCLady : I'm thinking the same thing. It was put there by another family member, for what reason I can't fathom. The student did the right thing, but under the law the districts hands are tied. The letter didn't go into great detail about the incident or the investigation for obvious reasons and that only leads to speculation

@Smokeybear : I think maybe a few days in the office to be a helper might serve as an appropriate "punishment".

I would hate for this child to think they did the wrong thing here. That's not the message we want to send if the child didn't handle the gun.

@eighteen : agree. The child probably thought that he would be rewarded for doing the right thing but instead got him and his whole family in trouble. I doubt if he will ever think that doing the right thing is a good idea.

@AMCLady : Exactly!

We should all call the school tomorrow.

@eighteen : calling the school won't help. They just follow district & state policy. Sad for the kid.

I'm not sure what to think other than I fear for the kids growing up in this world.

I really disagree with these "one size fits all" laws and policies like DAEP and ZERO TOLERANCE. Every situation is unique and should require a human somewhere in the process to make sure that it works appropriately.

When I was at Humble High School 30 years ago, a kid got expelled under the zero tolerance weapon policy. He had helped his family move over the weekend and there were still a couple of boxes in his car. One of the boxes in the back seat had stuff from the kitchen including silverware like knives. Somebody saw it, reported it, and the zero tolerance policy kicked in. It was ridiculous but what could you do?

You can't fix stupid with zero tolerance policies.

@eighteen : Sounds to me like possibly an older sib had it and put it in there in a hurry? Who knows, but what a frightening situation. What if the child had accidentally shot themselves??? I think this is 100% on someone else in their home.
