Never Buy A Subaru
I loved my new at the time 2019 Outback for the first few years. I am now trying to figure out if I should leave it in a bad area of NOLA with the keys in the car so that it will get stolen!! Truly just kidding, but I'm done. I had to put a transmission in at a cost of $8500 not quite a year ago. I figured it was still cheaper than buying a new car, and it isn't like a non-functioning car has a good trade in value. Anyway, now the check engine light is coming on along with other stuff. I took it to an independent repair shop. They ran a bunch of diagnostics and found out that it is a proprietary code that only Subaru has and will not release. So, Subaru has it rigged to where I have to bring it to them to get it serviced. Infuriating. I plan on writing a letter to the headquarters informing them that the have won the battle but lost the war as I will never own another. I will also inform them that I am blasting this far and wide. Just say no to Subaru.

RajunCajun :
Most if not all car manufacturers are requiring independent shops to pay for access to their software. Check out this news story.

RajunCajun : I have a 2021 Subaru Forester with 210,000+ miles on it so far : I'm hoping to get one more year out of it before I retire next September during which time I'll probably accumulate up to 20,000 more miles. Keeping my fingers crossed since only major issue I've really had so far with the car is the A/C going out.

How many miles do you have on your 2019 Subaru Outback so far?

I'm sorry to hear that. I have. 2019 crosstrek that I love. From all the research I did, they are usually pretty dependable cars that run a long time.

RajunCajun :
Have you considered getting an extended warranty. You'll to get what's wrong . But after that you'll be covered and you can take it to whatever mechanic you want including the dealership.

I find extended warranties to not be with it. I'm a self-insure for most things kind of girl. But thanks for the thought.

Yeah. The electronics are wacky on my car. The code that they were getting is that it needs a software update. And that can only be received from Subaru. What an absolute rip off. Not sure what I'll buy for my next car. I'm so done. Funny thing. I actually did accidentally leave the key fob in the car yesterday when I was at the library. Unfortunately, the library isn't a hotbed of car theft activity, so the car was still there. lol.

RajunCajun : have you asked your local Subaru dealer for an estimate regarding the software update? I've been thinking of taking mine in to our Subaru dealer for a navigational map update since I'm personally hoping to run mine up to 500,000 miles.

Itsme :
Extended warranties are a joke they make it look good on television, but they will not cover most of the things that go wrong, also most reputable mechanic shops will not accept most of the extended warranties.

RajunCajun :
It could be just that vehicle.
DD has a 2012 Subaru Impreza that she bought used in 2015 and has had almost no issues with it.
DW bought a new 2024 Crosstrek in February 2025. It has been fantastic for her.

Not for me I have had no problems I take to the dealer they let me know what's wrong they also contact the warranty co. Then call me when it's ready if I need a rental car they make arrangements with Enterprise and they come pick me up or send an Uber.

OhMy : I have not. Thinking of just ignoring the issue since it still runs. I'd like to get a new car in another year. The seats are starting to get uncomfortable. We would like something comfy for longer trips.

I refuse to buy non-American cars, unless they are German...
Avoid those problems by buying American... they're made in Mejico
