From Humble ISD:

Humble High School alumni return to Charles Street Stadium for a dedication ceremony celebrating the newly renovated venue.

By Joshua Koch | October 28, 2022

Humble High School alumni, who reached as far back as the Class of 1953 and to as recent as the Class of 2018, donned their purple and white once again on Thursday, October 27, 2022 for a special evening at historic Charles Street Stadium.

Sixty-five alumni were honored during a special ceremony at the stadium as the venue, which is celebrating its 80th year of existence in 2022, has undergone renovations including the rebuilding of the concession stand, ticket booth, restrooms, and adding storage for equipment and maintenance.

“Every detail was thought through and I’m so proud of this new stadium,” Mayor of Humble Norman Funderburk, a 1970 graduate of Humble High School, said during a speech. “Everything is incredibly awesome and I’m so happy that it is right here in the City of Humble.”

A new field house with locker rooms was added, along with a press box, fencing, parking and stadium entrances with controlled access for entering guests. ADA compliant upgrades include bleachers and sidewalks.

Along with Mayor Funderburk, Humble High School football head coach Marcus Schulz also addressed the crowd.

“I hope that we can bless the Humble community,” Schulz said. “I hope that we can make sure that the legacies and memories live on for many years to come.”

Humble ISD Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagen, Humble ISD Board of Trustees Robert Sitton, Robert Scarfo, Chris Parker, Martina Lemond Dixon and Marques Holmes were on-hand for the event.

Also in attendance was Jane Turner, the wife of the late George Turner, who was an Humble High School graduate and played in the first game at Charles Street Stadium in 1942.

George went on to become the Superintendent of Humble ISD for 21 years from 1962 to 1982. In 2010, the district stadium at Humble High School was renamed George Turner Stadium in his honor.

Jane remembers the old wooden bleachers at Charles Street Stadium and now 80 years later admires the metal bleachers and new turf field for her beloved Wildcats.

“It’s wonderful to be here,” Jane, who taught for 26 years at Humble High School, said. “The new building is so beautiful.”

The most recent Humble High School graduate on hand was Alexandra Trevino (Class of 2018), who enjoyed talking to the different generations of alumni.

“This was a really amazing event,” Trevino said. “I really enjoyed being able to participate. Being able to talk to different individuals from the different graduating classes and hearing their stories from playing football on the field and coming to games. It was really eye-opening and inspiring.”

Charles Street Stadium is home to Humble High School’s sub-varsity football team, as well as football teams for Humble Middle and Ross Sterling Middle Schools. The facility will also continue to be the main venue for all Humble ISD soccer teams.
