Cory Thomas thought he was heading to the Media Center inside Humble High School to try out some new technology.

At least that’s what he was told.

Thomas, a junior at Humble High School, was welcomed by members of the Wildcatdets, the drumline and friends and family cheering him on.

A check was also waiting, as he had won a raffle for a $1,000 scholarship to Lone Star College-Kingwood.

“I didn’t even know what was going on,” Thomas said with a smile. “My teacher told me we were coming to try out a new technology that the library had. So, when I saw the scholarship, I thought it was just for our class, I didn’t know it was for me. I was really surprised.”

Humble High School Principal Dairus Cosby added: “I was thrilled to see our very own HHS Wildcat Cory Thomas receive a scholarship for Lone Star College -Kingwood. It was heartwarming to witness the joy on his face and his family's reaction when he was presented with this award. It was a proud moment for all of us, and we wish Cory nothing but the best for his future endeavors. We are truly proud of our WILDCAT!”

Lone Star College-Kingwood, throughout the 2023 football season, had set up an information tent outside George Turner Stadium for each home game. Students were able to walk up, get information about Lone Star College-Kingwood and enter their name into a raffle for a scholarship.

“This is our connection to the community,” Lone Star College-Kingwood President Dr. Melissa Gonzalez said. “We want students and families to be aware of all the opportunities that we have at the college. Being involved at the high school, we are here at the ground level of making sure that we have face-to-face contact with them and that we also have events with them and their families.”

Thomas’ mother, Tiffiiany Godley, had been pushing her son to apply for scholarships since he was entering his junior year of high school.

Godley didn’t know that he had entered himself into this drawing and was shocked when she had found out he was selected as the winner.

“It’s very special, he’s the first one to win a scholarship in the family so far,” she said. “I’ve been pushing them to apply. They’re juniors. I didn’t go to school on scholarship, but I would like for them to.”

Thomas has aspirations to become an architect.

This scholarship jumpstarts his road to a college education, Thomas said, and he’s looking forward to pursuing his dream.

“It’s a lot of free money for me to go to college and further my education,” Thomas said. “I really want to go to college. This is great.”
