Sammee: wondering why they transported him to Ben Taub? Isn't it quite a distance?

@RajunCajun :

I always thought…they sent you there if you didn't have insurance. Emoticon

RajunCajun : It's the trauma hospital, local ones aren't equipped for bad traumas. He must have been badly injured.

@MrsT : W e got in a wreck years ago and went to memorial woodlands. Dh had Ins thru work when Humble ISD had free Ins for employees. They were all over him and didn`t even want to give me a sling for my broken collarbone. Flat out asked me if I had Ins. I said no and they left the room. An attendant later came in and gave me a sling and flat out told me they weren't to treat me as I was uninsured. True story.......

I was wrong, there are 2 that service adults. Ben Taub and Memorial Hermann Med Center are both level 1 trauma centers. Texas Children's Med Center is also level 1. All so far away. Thank God for Life Flight.

As to Ben Taub - think about this. When an officer is injured in the line of duty the determination of whether BT or Memorial Hermann depends upon the type of wound. For a number of years my late husband was a patient at the Wound Center at Memorial Hermann downtown. This was located where the patients coming in via Life Flight came into the hospital via the elevator from the helipad. Everything stopped when someone came in and all attention went to that individual from everyone. We learned so much about the 2 main trauma hospitals in Houston during that period. Several doctors actually said if you ever have a higher caliber gun shot wound that Ben Taub is where you want to go because they are prepared for it. Just remember - Dr. Red Duke - he was one of the greatest and so dang cool too! He got the BT trauma center on the map so to speak.

Yea Ben Taub is definitely not somewhere you want to be unless you absolutely have to. When I was in high school, I had a friend who put his arm through a window and they didn't have insurance so he had to go to BT. He was still sitting in the hallway the next day. There were metal detectors, there was blood on the floor in the hallways. It was quite gross.

West-Tex : it looks like they ran straight into that door where Goodwill takes the donations. They took someone away in an ambulance, because they turned the siren on right next to me as I was walking out of Aldi. It scared the bejesus out of me.

@MrsT : Oh that would me too..it's so, so loud!!

@MrsT : did he go by ambulance or did he drive himself? When I had an emergency (heart) I drove myself to the emergency room at Kingwood hospital. They made me sit there for hours before the tended to me. By observation I learned that if you go by ambulance you are taking care of right away. Hence when I was stung by a wasp and went into an anaphylactic shock I called an ambulance and I was taking care of right away in the emergency room. Lesson learned. Had nothing to do with insurance because on both trips I had insurance.

@AMCLady: yes. Always call ambulance of true emergency. They start treatment in the ambulance and the hospital knows that you are on the way.
