Don't Weigh Me

Does anyone else think this is odd?

So apparently, this is such a big deal that you can buy these cards to hand to your health provider in order to avoid being weighed (there are also child versions that emphasize the absence of discussing the child's weight in front of them).

"Being weighed, particularly in front of someone else, is rarely a pleasant experience, thanks to a culture of relentless weight stigma and unrealistic body expectations...it can also be harmful, particularly for those dealing with disordered eating, eating disorders, and body image issues. "Because we live in a fatphobic society, being weighed causes feelings of stress and shame...Many people feel anxiety about seeing the doctor, and will avoid going to the doctor in order to avoid the scale."

I get it's no fun stepping on the scale in front of strangers for many, but isn't it kind of necessary in terms of medication dosages, diagnoses, treatment plans, etc.?

What say you, ADC?

@brightlights : I think it's very odd. I definitely don't enjoy being weighed but I do it. It's a good benchmark to know if you are gaining or losing weight or maintaining it.

So my mom refuses to get weighed at the doctor's office for at least the last 20 years. She's not overweight at all, doesn't have any health issues, takes care of herself, super active, etc. She's just a proper midwestern woman (I know, right? No apples falling from that tree on my end! 🤣) who thinks certain things are "none of anyone's business" (political affiliation, income, religious affiliation, and yes, weight). I'm like, "how do you get away with that?" and she said when they ask her to step on the scale, she just says, "No, thank you" and trots off to the exam room. No one has ever challenged her! 😂😂😂

This is reminiscent of those constitutional freedom to breathe cards that were going around at the beginning of the pandemic

This same ignorance is what has placed 78% of all covid patients into hospitals.

@M1cha3lo0o : I get it, tho. Kind of an out-of-sight-out-of-mind thing. 🤪

This should be in-your-mind, imo. I like getting weighed at the doctor's office so I can immediately come home and sync up my scale with theirs. 😂

@brightlights : Isn't it kind of medically necessary if you are at a doctor's appointment? It's to better manage your health. Don't they base medicine dose according to body weight? Also, to see if you are gaining/losing weight, which might indicate a problem. Plus, I like to sync up with my home scales as well. If people have a problem with a nurse weighing them, they better hope they never end up bedridden. Stepping on a scale will seem like a piece of cake. Before they amputated my leg, I was unable to leave the hospital bed and not only had to wear a diaper and/or use a bedpan, but nurses had to clean me up as well. Talk about loss of dignity. I will gladly step on a scale.

Get on the scale and get over it. I got to the point that I was embarrassed to get on the scale so I did something about it.

@Luckysis : Right? Do people think that the office staff goes to happy hour talking shniz and they're all, "And hey! What about that Gertrude Derfenschmidtz who weighed in at 180? Girl, eat a salad!" 😂😂😂

When the scales says to you "one at a time please", you know you are in trouble.

@M1cha3lo0o : Ignorance??? What's ignorant about choosing not to be weighed? Maybe your quickness to judge is ignorance. It's not your place, none of your business if someone doesn't want to be weighed by another person and is in no way comparable to people being hospitalized with Covid!!!

I'm not embarrassed to admit that my response is almost identical to @brightlights mother being weighed. I either say "No thank you" and/or "I don't do that"" and no one freaks out.

Sometimes I will verbally state the number of pounds I'm carrying, but it's my choice. If you choose to do what is a standard procedure, that's your business and I'm not going to insult you.

@brightlights : Awww, that is incredibly kind of you to say. I had a lot of prayers coming from you guys on here. Sometimes we have to find strength within that we don't realize is there, until something tragic happens. Since it was my right leg, I was not able to drive, even with my prostheses. After lessons and certification (and passing road test at DMV), I now drive with a left foot accelerator!
