Volcano mulching

My wife has been complaining for years about the way some of the trees in the area are mulched. Piling mulch high around the bark is harmful to the tree. Google "volcano mulching" for a full discussion.

@tflea : I concur. They will not grow as hearty as trees that haven't had this done. Just on my street alone I can see a difference between those who left mulch around their tree and those that spread it out.

I have mulch around my trees (lots of them) and they are growing so fast I need a tree trimmer. I was about to go buy more mulch but maybe not now.

Mulch keeps the roots warmer on those icy days but not sure that's needed most of the year around here. I do have the bed around my tree in the front but I don't see a difference in my tree
