I don't think it's out of the question that Young believed he was acting in self defense. Perhaps he shouldn't be charged with murder, but the kid is too young to lawfully carry a gun. Had he not been carrying, the opportunity for this tragedy would not have been there, so I think he should be fully prosecuted in that regard.
@Floyd : It's interesting when you look at the lawful carry aspect. There was a kid in LA who was being attacked by a mob of his peers. He pulled out a gun (or as someone pointed out from a defense perspective, "found a gun") and began shooting. This was clearly self defense, however, one of the teens died and several were injured. I believe the victim and several assailants went to jail.
