Coronavirus Potential New Paths of Transmission Put Global Authorities on Edge

The fight to contain the coronavirus entered a new and potentially alarming phase on Thursday as public health officials in the United States and Germany grappled with patients who exhibited no known connection to others with the illness.

That raised the possibility that the virus could have begun to spread locally by an as yet unknown means, or that infected people had spread the illness to others sequentially, making it virtually impossible for the authorities to find and isolate the origin.

Either way, the two cases, thousands of miles apart, underscored how quickly the virus was making its way around the globe after first emerging in China late last year, and how difficult it was proving to contain.

The only way this thing is going to be contained is through a vaccine-fast. Additionally what we're seeing in this country is a colossal failure of leadership. Our national leaders, particularly the executive branch, should have gotten out in front of this long before now. And explain to the American people that the majority of people that get this virus survive as the mortality rate is higher for the flu than COVID-19.

That would have gone a long way to alleviating fears. History has shown that when there's a lack of official information on something like this fear and rumor spread faster than a virus. Remember the Ebola scare a few short years ago? Folks were ready to turn violent.

Our national leaders, particularly the executive branch...

@rocket : Well I saw that one coming lol. I'm not certain how far ahead of this you can get with accurate information, since this is a new disease only discovered months ago, and we are just now dealing with unknown paths of transmission. Also, I'm not sure where you saw that flu mortality rates are higher, I'm finding quite the opposite. Whereas the flu shows to claim usually 1 out of every 700-1000 cases, COVID-19 shows to have taken 1 out of every 40-50. I agree informing the people is definitely imperative, you never want to leave a panicked public to cook up half baked answers to their own questions in these situations. But taking the time to observe and know you are reporting correctly is just as important IMO.

@rocket : from your article

The coronavirus outbreak, however, is proving to be more deadly than the flu. It has killed roughly 2% of the people who have contracted it so far, according to world health officials. That compares with a mortality rate of 0.095% for the flu in the U.S.

I'm hoping that the US government will cover the cost of hospitalization.

@rocket : I agree that the "death count" for the flu is higher, based on a far greater number of infections. The mortality rate is different, and this new virus has only had a few months to show us what it can do. I'd imagine the only reason it is as low as it is, would be due to the drastic measures taken to contain the virus- still resulting in nearly 80K cases and climbing. It seems to spread by the same methods as the flu (and possibly more unknown paths), so it would stand to reason that given the chance, the case numbers could surely become more comparable, causing mortality rates to unfortunately be more clear as to who's most deadly.
