Washington Becomes First State To Legalize Human Compost

Story Here

Excerpts:

"Under the new law, people there can now choose to have their body turned into soil after their death.

The process is seen as an alternative to cremations and burials, and as a practical option in cities where land for graveyards is scarce.

At the end of the composting, loved ones are given the soil, which they can use in planting flowers, vegetables or trees.

The bill was signed into law by Governor Jay Inslee on Tuesday."

This is a topic I've thought about before...Currently, for most humans in developed countries there's burial and cremation...

With burial, the body takes up a space and just stays there until it will ultimitely be dug up and relocated...And that WILL eventually happen, don't kid yourselves...It may take a thousand years but it will eventually happen, "progress" will make sure of it...There just won't be enough space for the billions of bodies to take up...

With cremation, the body is burnt to ash...Smaller space, but will have to be passed down from care-taker to care-taker or buried/entombed somewhere that will eventually get moved for the same reason as above...

But the one thing both of these methods don't do is to return nutrients back to the earth...As we grow, we take nutrients from the earth and use them to create energy and maintain our bodies through our food source...Doesn't matter if it's meat or vegs, it still traces back to the earth...If we never return nutrients, we're basically "takers" and contributors to a depleated earth in the long run...

So, this is probably not a bad idea, IMO...

@EddyFree : Taking it one step further, there are biodegradable Urns that your "dirt" can be put in along with some acorns or other tree seeds Just bury/plant the urn and you will become a beautiful tree. This appeals to me......

@EddyFree and @Smokeybear I agree... It appeals to me, too. DH already thinks I'm weird with cremation. smh Of course, if I go first he might change his tune when he sees the difference in price!! Emoticon
