USS Abraham Lincoln

Interesting article, 250 days at sea and counting. Rising mental issues and jumping from ship.

It's fairly well known that jumping from ship will get you a free pass home, it is also well known that the survival rate isn't that good, even if you jump with people watching

Sucks for all of our military caught up in the current nonsense

@Wanderer :
Lol, swim call, jumping from the elevators. Those are rare opportunities. I made 4 deployments and all commanding officers declined the risk

In all seriousness though mental health is a real issue for you men on long deployments, we always had guys jump off hoping for a pass to go home, usually doing it when they knew there were witnesses to maximize the chance of rescue. We recovered most of them

redneckroy : You mean suicidal jumps? #msg2197391

@Wanderer : I think most of the guys jumping don't really want to die. Just go home, and are willing to take the chance.

Of course with a super high relationship failure rate in the military, there are those that are legit suicide attempts

Mental issues surface when you are at sea that long with no distractions from the 12 hour work shifts

Used to say that if you locked yourself in your house, cut the phone lines and cable, (now wifi too), and painted over all windows but the top few inches; and only got mail 3 weeks old, that was kind of what it was.

We always had a. End date, these guys don't seem to have one

Sucks for them and their families

There used to be limits to how long they could be on the ship without a chance to touch land #msg2197464

@texas2011 : nah - we did 105 days during peace time - every 45 days they shut down operations, have what they call a steel beach picnic (grill hamburgers on the flight deck) and have a "beer day" - all hands get a coupon good for 2 beers - typically served luke warm. - -

Maintenance becomes a real issue - and that generally would limit the length of deployments -

the ship can only carry so many spare parts - and the parts supplies are generally depleted in a certain amount of time. resupply efforts while deployed are somewhat limited in scope.

@redneckroy : Thank you for your service!

This ship has set a naval record for most continuous days at sea with only 2 short port calls in 9 months, don't think they were allowed off the ship at one of those.
It can't help that they are getting mind games with the back and forth........you're going home, you're not going home......I'm sure they must feel like they can't trust anything anymore. Not to mention the lack of basic necessities and food. Low morale with a massive war budget seems wrong.
Family member are meeting with Congressional members. And anyone reading this with concerns can call their senators, who are on break right now but Houston offices should be taking messages. Those who serve our great country deserve better.

Those working below decks could go days without seeing the sky.
Sure seems like today , lots of things could be done to improve moral. Such as food, communications, and entertainment.
