I have a question about the airplanes going into intercontinental. I have noticed a sound they have been making lately when they are flying over. I have loved in and around the airport for a long time. It's kind of a whiny sound and also a little loud. Then it stops and goes back to normal. Does anyone know or has noticed that it's been different lately???

@Blackhorse77 :

1. Intercontinental is so 1990.
2. It's probably the special plane you hear.
3. This could've been included in the random questions thread.

@Blackhorse77 : all depends on the wind and atmosphere that day. The odd sound you speak of is the engines going to idle for a few seconds to help slow the ground speed.

Also when it's cold, or a thick ceiling, the sounds are reflected more downward and are more noticeable.

@Blackhorse77 : I've listened to those planes come in for 33 years. Andyou're right, that whiny sound is sort of new. I figured it was the planes trying to slow down like putting on the brakes so to speak. I also noticed that they're flying later at night. A few years ago I could bank on them stopping after 10:30 at night but now they come in all the way up till 12:00. It's kind of annoying when I'm trying to get to sleep at night.

It could be the Airbus A220. Those are fairly new and make a howling noise.

@Anurania : That isn't the one. Someone made a thread about the funny sounding plane. It was black or blue and orange. Had really large engines.

Oh, and it's not new. It's been the same all 12 years I've lived here.
Only Delta flies the A220 here and it's twice a day.

@eighteen : Yes I've seen that one go over and it's loud but this sound is different. I was just wondering what has changed that I hear it several times a night.
