More than likely the Crumbley's were told last night that charges were coming. They could be anywhere by now.

They were supposedly "out of town for their safety" and were coming back for a hearing tomorrow.

These people are beyond disgusting and pathetic. I absolutely have no words. They must have a negative score on IQ tests.

The parents have neglected their parental responsibilities. However, the school has also neglected their responsibility to keep students safe by ignoring the vivid warning signs of violence and by letting the student back in the classroom without checking his backpack or requiring counseling before his return.

@Rosey :
I have heard that the school did required the parents 48 hours to get him counseling, Maybe that was the agreement they made at the morning meeting?
Problem was that he already had his plan in action by bringing the gun by then.

Not sure about checking backpack, he probably didn't have it at the meeting, and I'm not sure if school staff can go thru it. Yea, in hindsight, they should've asked if he had access to guns. Maybe they did. Since district staff can't discuss private meetings we don't know…, BUT…it sounds like the school was following protocol. I'm sick of everyone expecting schools to DO IT ALL! Feed, educate, counsel, nurse, clothe, transport…etc…
In this case it sounds like the school staff were the ONLY ones trying to do anything. Parents damn sure weren't and I'm so glad they are being held responsible.

@texas2011 : I mean, if they're going to throw parents in jail for truancy, they can at least pay child support. 😂

@texas2011 : A search of the backpack would have been reasonable and legal under the circumstances. Though usually, in my experience, a student will frequently give consent for a search and empty the bag himself.

Most parents do take responsibility for their children. Only a few do not. The school does have to take action when a parent does not or can not. Circumstances can affect any parent and impact their ability to care for their children.

Under NO circumstances should a student that has threatened extreme violence have been sent back to class. This is not a hindsight statement. It is a normal and expected procedure in a school to remove the student until they can be fully evaluated. It is also normal procedure to check a student's bags, coats, locker or pockets if there is a reasonable suspicion of a weapon.

Students threatening extreme violence towards themselves or others happens more frequently than what one would expect and must be taken seriously every time.

@Rosey :
The question is did he threaten extreme violence? Or did he just make a drawing and get caught searching bullets on his phone? I haven't heard that he ever mentioned shooting anyone. Kids boast about guns all the time. After all -we live in a gun worshipping country, that's why we have more school shootings than any others.
I remember having elementary kid who drew a picture of a gun and shooting. We had to investigate and notify parents. But kids watch so many violent video games, this doesn't necessarily mean they have a plan.
Apparently, Crumbley's parents refused counseling. They have the right to do that and schools can't force it, and I bet they were giving the parents 48 hours before suspension since he didn't make a direct threat against the school.
Regardless , my heart is hurting for the school staff. They and the school will never be the same.

@texas2011 : I am too, but unfortunately they did drop the ball. Sadly they had plenty of red flags and didn't even let the school resource in on what was going on. They should have never allowed him to go back to class. Should have called the Resource Officer and let him go from there. The threat was there and the kid literally asked for help and said "the voices wouldn't stop".

@chasinghosts :
I don't think he made any statement about "voices".
He did write near the drawing that "the thoughts won't stop".
He later claimed he was planning a video game. The school was taking steps but time was not on their side.

There was a video the night before the shooting where he did make a threat, but police and school were not made aware. But were the parents aware of the video? Other students had seen it on snapchat, and bothered enough to skip school, but apparently no one notified the police or school in time. It we want more blame to go around, what about sites like Snapchat or whatever site he used that allows videos to be posted and then disappear? If it was still available, I think we would have seen it by now. Kids can be really bold when they know their post will disappear.

( Timeline from AP)
" Tuesday, Nov. 30: A teacher finds a note on Ethan's desk that alarms her enough to take a photo, the prosecutor says. It includes a drawing of a handgun and the words: "The thoughts won't stop. Help me." Also depicted is a bullet with the words "blood everywhere" above a person who appears to have been shot twice and is bleeding. A laughing emoji is drawn below the figure. The note also says "my life is useless" and "the world is dead." The teacher reports the information to school counselors and the dean.

A counselor removes Ethan from the classroom and takes him to the office with his backpack. The counselor obtains the drawing, but Ethan has already scratched out portions. He says the drawing is part of a video game he is designing and that he wants a career as a video game designer, the superintendent says.

The parents are summoned to the school for a meeting that occurs around 10 a.m. While the school tries to reach them, Ethan remains in the office for an hour-and-a-half as counselors continue to observe and speak with him, Throne says. Ethan expresses concern about missing homework assignments and asks for his science homework, which he works on while waiting. The counselors do not believe he will harm others based on his behavior, demeanor and responses, according to the superintendent.

The parents arrive and are shown the note. The counselors ask Ethan about his potential for self-harm or harming others. They again conclude he is not a risk due to his answers, which are affirmed by the parents. The parents are advised that they are required to get him counseling within 48 hours or the school will contact Children's Protective Services. They refuse a request to take their son home for the day and leave without him, apparently to return to work, Throne says. He returns to the classroom rather than go "home to an empty house," which the superintendent says is because he had no prior disciplinary infractions.

About 12:51 p.m., Ethan emerges from a bathroom with the gun his father bought four days before. He fires at students in the hallway, killing four and wounding six students and one teacher. Deputies capture him within …"

Per Detroit Sheriff's news conference at 3:00 am:

Someone let them (the Crumblys) into the building where the cops found and arrested both of them. Apparently, everything is caught on video.

All 3 are on suicide watch and will have no contact with each other while in jail. Sources doubt Ethan knows his parents are charged and in jail.

Seems like he was a sweet kid at one point. Sad what adolescents does for some teens, while others seemingly breeze right through. Not excusing anything. Just wonder what happened.
